“I Am Not A Crook” – Richard Nixon – Nixon turns over the Watergate Tapes

On October 23, 1973 President Richard Nixon agreed to turn over White House tape recordings requested by the Watergate special prosecutor to Judge John J. Sirica. Excerpts of these tapes were played in open court in U.S. v. Mitchell and U.S. v. Connally. Many of the conversations on these tapes indicate Nixon’s knowledge of the Watergate break in and the following cover-up. For this reason, they are often referred to as the “Smoking Gun” tapes.
